The Valle d’Itria is an area of central Puglia between the capital, Bari and the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. The towns of Locorotondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca and Ceglie Messapica are all part of the Valle d’Itria. The recognising features of the Valle d’Itria are: trulli, the typical ancient Apulian small round dwelling of stone with a conical roof; olive trees, many secular; and dry-stone walls.
UNDER THE APULIAN SKY was born from a combined dream between myself and my husband Fabio. We came up with the idea when we were living in Melbourne, Australia. Fabio was born and raised in Taranto, Puglia and I was born and raised in Melbourne, of Italian heritage. We met in Melbourne and planned to live there, until life took an unexpected turn and changed our priorities, so we decided to move to Italy with our 7-year-old daughter Lucrezia in 2014.
After much searching, we found the perfect property and whilst it was a ruin, we saw the potential and embarked on an incredible adventure.
It was a painstaking job to restore the property and turn it into what we both knew it could become. Unfortunately, Fabio passed away before the restoration was completed. Whilst Fabio never saw our dream realised, Lucrezia and I placed an armchair under an olive tree in his honour, where he can enjoy the beauty of what we created.
UNDER THE APULIAN SKY offers guests the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Valle d’Itria. The property is in the tranquil countryside, approximately 2 kilometres from the town centre of Martina Franca. The outdoor seated area, overlooking the swimming pool which is emersed between olive trees, is the perfect setting to enjoy the sublime sun and capture the colours unique to the area; the white of the TRULLI and LAMIA, the silver/green of the olive trees and the red of the soil. Two alfresco dining areas (one reserved for the LAMIA and one reserved for the TRULLI) are located near the barbeque and are available to savour the culinary delights of the Valle d’Itria. The dining areas are covered to shade guests from the sun during the day, or to provide shelter if it rains, but can open to allow more air to circulate on hot summer evenings. If the evenings cool down, the firepit in the centre of the outdoor seated area allowing guests to remain outside.
